CHALLENGE

TAI provided a detailed engineering package and bid and construction services for the Client’s Compressor Station Project for an additional natural gas compressor. The existing compressor at the station was required to remain in service (limited outages) due to regulatory requirements. This requirement necessitated the Phased Construction details to provide temporary power. The compressor area of the plant is a Class I, Division 2 (Flammable Gas). All temporary and permanent power equipment and wiring methods had to conform to the requirements of the National Electrical Code for use of explosion proof enclosures and fittings.

SOLUTION

TAI provided a detailed engineering package and bid and construction services for the Client’s Compressor Station Project for an additional natural gas compressor. Specifically, TAI provided the following:

  • Equipment specification for the purchase of new electrical building, Motor Control Center and Automatic Transfer Switch.
  • Detailed drawing sets for phased construction to provide temporary power for the existing NG Compressor and auxiliary equipment during the construction of the project (3 pre-construction phases, 11 drawings).
  • Detailed drawings package for bid and construction (33 drawings) that included Single Line Drawing, cable schedules, plan views, equipment layouts, site lighting plan, compressor building plans and details, associated equipment plans and details and demo plans and details.
  • A Short Circuit and Coordination and Arc Flash Study for the new electrical service and equipment.
Initiated and coordinated a new electrical service request with the service provider, Allegheny Energy.

TAI also provided a complete overhaul of the site electrical power distribution system including service equipment replacement, new compressor building, new MCC building, and addition of a 400 kW standby generator. A power system analysis was included.

Relevant Project Details:

  • The power system analysis of the project included fault analysis, protective device coordination, and arc flash hazard evaluation of the entire site’s electrical distribution system.
  • Recommendations for circuit breaker settings and fuse selection were included and designed to mitigate arc flash hazard while providing a reasonable level of selectivity.
  • Printed arc flash labels were provided for installation by plant personnel.
RESULTS

TAI Electrical Engineering Division provided a detailed engineering package for bid and construction for the addition of a second natural gas compressor and a new electrical service with emergency back-up power for this Compressor Station. TAI also provided a Short Circuit and Coordination and Arc Flash Study for the new electrical service and equipment. TAI provided the specification of a new electrical building, new Motor Control Center and Automatic Transfer Switch as well as detailed electrical drawings – and in accordance to the requirements of the National Electrical Code for use of explosion proof enclosures and fittings.

Services Provided:

  • Bid Package Development
  • Power System Analysis
