Project Details

The Client announced publicly in November 2012 that it had completed its investment in the Relay facility. Relay can now fill up to 300 bottles a minute with Jose Cuervo tequila, Captain Morgan run, and Seagram’s whiskey and vodka products. Southwestern Baltimore County has had a tradition of whiskey production going back to the late 1800s. When the Client invested in the original Maryland Distillery facility in 2001, they revitalized that tradition by now blending and bottling more than 11 million cases of spirits a year. Alcohol is shipped to the Relay facility for blending and bottling, and this investment in the Relay facility has allowed the site to become one of the Client’s most efficient processing facilities globally.

TAI Engineering was tasked with numerous projects as part of the Client’s investment in Relay to complete upgrades to key production areas and three new high speed bottling lines which all required a large scale bulk storage area. TAI supported the Client on this project from concept through start up by providing engineering, design, construction management and commissioning. The full scope of work for this Class 1 Division 1 and 2 tank farm included relocating an existing roadway, building new tank foundations and containment, and implementing new fire protection. TAI’s design of a new continuous batch process created the need for integrating (4) 100,000 bulk storage tanks into the new process system. The new bulk storage area was required to support in-line blending, chilling and filtering. This continuous in-line blending system represented a paradigm shift for the Client, as previous operations were performed in a batch mode.

TAI provided supporting equipment that included instrumentation, process piping, as well as the managing and procuring the ancillary tank equipment and equipment for a new tank truck receiving area. In addition, TAI played a major role in the start-up and commissioning of the various projects.
