CHALLENGE

The Client was in need of a more effective and efficient delivery modernization process for its solvent resin tank farm and in process safety compliance. After working with the Client for several months discussing options for the upgrade of their facility, TAI was commissioned to provide advanced design and engineering, bid package development, as well as Construction Management and Project Management services. Having extensive experience with complex projects and Process Safety, TAI’s team of Engineers, Construction Management, and Project Management were all present during start-up activities.

SOLUTION

By expanding existing operations into an adjacent parking lot, TAI completed this project in one phase to accommodate an aggressive project schedule. Areas of new work included the construction of a tank truck unloading station, new control room building, fire protection systems and utility equipment.  TAI installed 25 tanks designed to hold hazardous and flammable liquids, along with their foundations and containment areas. The raw material unloading and “transfer forward” operations were fully automated into a new Distributed Control System for inventory tracking.

TAI’s design and engineering scopes of work included all Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Process, Electrical, and Automation detailing relative to the upgrade and required equipment. Additionally, TAI was tasked with Construction Management activities such as Scheduling, Vendor Management, Change Order Approval, Quality Control, and Administration Support. TAI’s Onsite Project Manager was responsible for the daily oversight of all contractors, site safety, requests for information and related activities.

RESULT

Specific examples of TAI’s value creation on this project include the following:

  • Evaluated methods of non-destructive testing and developed alternate qualification procedures to minimize impact on existing plant operations.
  • Negotiated with contractors regarding proposed change order pricing, resulting in reduction of >$200,000 in submitted costs.
